Details
The creation of Canada’s modern flag was sparked by preparations for the country’s 1967 centennial celebration. A parliamentary committee, composed of numerous experts, spent months examining a wide range of design submissions. Eventually, they settled on a bold new flag that featured red and white—the official national colours since 1921—and a central maple leaf, a symbol long associated with Canada dating back to the fur trade era. This iconic flag was officially raised for the first time on Parliament Hill on February 15, 1965.
