Celebrating 100 years of the original publication of Anne of Green Gables.
Prince Edward Island is known for its special character that lures countless tourists to its shores each year. It's more than the warm sandy beaches and red sweeping bluffs; it's a fictional character named Anne Shirley who arrived on the island in 1908, borne of the celebrated novel by Lucy Maud Montgomery. Anne Shirley is a young orphan girl who is accidentally sent to middle-aged siblings Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert after they request a boy to help on their farm. Despite the unfortunate mishap, they decide to keep Anne Shirley who, with her feisty temperament, vivid imagination and flair for theatrics quickly begins to transform their quiet rural lives with her antics and misadventures. In writing Anne of Green Gables, Montgomery found much of her inspiration in her own childhood and described the people and places so vividly that many of the sites around Cavendish have become tourist attractions for people seeking to personally experience Anne Shirley's world. Indeed, that spirited, red-haired orphan has touched millions of people around the world. Anne of Green Gables has been translated into more than 20 languages—a heartwarming tale of 19th-century island life so sincere and engaging, its author has been declared a person of national historic significance.
