Sweetest Holiday Memories
Some say that the candy cane was the brainchild of a European children’s choirmaster seeking a ruse to quiet his restless young charges through the long midnight mass on Christmas Eve. Whether or not this account is true, candy canes have become part of the fabric of the holiday season—be they secreted away in stockings on the mantle, hung carefully on the tree, or transformed into holiday ornaments of paper, felt or silk.
The beautiful green poinsettia, native to Mexico, is winter’s rising star. Given 12 to 14 hours of darkness a day for about a month, its topmost bracts—actually a type of leaf—will turn bright red, pink or creamy white. Its shape recalls the star so fundamental in many traditions, while its colours, like those of the delightful candy cane, are symbolic of the most profound elements of many holiday traditions. The growth and adaptation of the poinsettia highlight the life that thrives at each turn of the year’s wheel, even in the darkest depths of winter.
A clutch of poinsettia leaves. A delicate glass ornament, ready to take its place of honour on a Christmas tree. A glimmering star, so evocative of the magic of the holidays. And, of course, a sweet peppermint candy cane of fresh red, green and white. Each in its own way carries the promise of honeyed holiday moments in the making while bringing back memories from a lifetime of cherished celebrations.
