“I am the largest terrestrial carnivore in the world. Scientists have placed me in the marine mammal group because I live primarily on the frozen sea ice and feed almost exclusively on the seals that swim below it. Men have long admired my hunting skills; the ways I stalk my prey, lie motionless by a breathing hole or imitate an ice floe are similar to techniques they might use themselves. According to legend, I am ultimately the one who decides whether the hunter’s spear succeeds or fails; pursuing a polar bear requires an honest tribute of honor and respect.
