He examines a lovely pearl pin he found in France for Margaret and sits gracefully in the mahogany armchair by the bed, recalling that he will be dining with his friend, Harry Markland Molson, this evening. Completed in February 1912 and captained by White Star Line admiral Captain E. J. Smith, the 270-metre vessel was longer than four city blocks, more than 53 metres tall, weighed more than 45,000 tons, and comprised ten decks and numerous compartments divided into fifteen bulkheads. When you drift off in the evening, the Robin’s call is likely to be the last you hear. When you wake up, it is usually the first.
Though early colonists, perhaps wistfully, named it for the European Robin, the American Robin is actually North America’s largest thrush. The orange-breasted bird’s calls and songs are one of its most distinctive features. Males tend to be the more vocal of the species, singing from high atop trees early in the morning and as part of the American Robin’s elaborate courtship rituals.
Although it originally inhabited primarily the forest clearings of North America, the American Robin has become one of the few species to have benefitted from urbanization. The growth of large swathes of open fields and lawn, accompanied by treed gardens and parks in residential areas, has actually created habitat for the species, giving it easy access to its preferred diet of fruit, berries, and invertebrates like worms and grubs.
American Robins can form roosting groups of more than 200,000, though their roosts generally include only a few dozen to a few hundred birds. The males, in particular, engage in this behaviour both on wintering grounds in the southern United States and northern Mexico and in its summer breeding territory across Canada and the United States. Although the American Robin is a migratory bird, it will stay year-round in regions whose climate remains temperate. Although they almost always return to the same breeding area, Robins’ path south is not set and seems to reflect the availability of food in a given year. In general, the migration south from Canada occurs in October.
The American Robin bears two to three clutches of light blue eggs per breeding season, generally beginning in April or early May. Both parents work together to feed their chicks about 40 times per day. Sometimes clutches by the same mother will overlap (the second clutch housed in a separate nest), even before the first group of three or four chicks is ready to leave its nest. In this case, the father may take over primary care of the first group of chicks.

The Coin
This painted cupronickel coin has a diameter of 35 millimetres. The name of the order for all butterflies, Lepidoptera, means scale winged and refers to the unique structure of butterfly wings, which are composed of microscopic scales layered on a thin, transparent membrane called chitin that stretches over structures that are much like veins. This wing construction, which is being studied by scientists for applications in photonics and solar heating, helps butterflies to collect solar heat as they bask in the sun. The black colouring common on the wings of many butterflies, including the Canadian Tiger Swallowtail, is also important in this process. The unique internal structure of the wing scales is responsible for the shimmering colour of many butterfly wings.

Unlike other Swallowtail species, the Canadian Tiger Swallowtail breeds only a single generation each year. Its survival mechanisms, which include exceptional camouflage, help to protect it through its various stages of life. The larvae go through several moults, with their colour at each stage adapted to camouflage them from predators. In the earliest stages, they resemble bird droppings to deter consumption by birds. By the time they are mature caterpillars, they are dark green with two spots that look like eyes on their swollen front-section, lending them an uncanny resemblance to the head of a snake. They feed only at night—a further protection. When the caterpillar does need to defend itself, the osmeterium, an organ at the back of the head that is unique to Swallowtails, releases a foul smell.

Found at the edges of hardwood forests and prevalent in flower gardens and among flowering bushes like lilac, the Canadian Tiger Swallowtail is common in all regions of Canada from mid-May to July. He added other symbolic elements as well, such as a vase featuring Her Majesty’s Canadian Diamond Jubilee emblem, a pink Queen Elizabeth rose, and six lights representing each decade of the Queen’s reign. The small, wedge-shaped owl is approximately 30 to 45 centimetres in length, weighing between 200 and 700 grams. Its body is adorned with beautiful golden back, wing, and tail feathers. It has long legs, sharp talons, and a broad wingspan of up to one metre. Its otherworldly white, disc-shaped face is punctuated by two dark forward-looking eyes and a small beak. The Barn Owl does not have ear tufts.

Specialized serrations on its wing feathers allow owls to fly with preternatural silence. From June to August, the eastern prickly pear is also covered with large, yellow and orangey-red flowers that are so attractive people take the cactus home to plant in their own gardens. This practice, plus habitat loss are the greatest threats to this endangered plant.

Cacti are often viewed as troublesome weeds, but they are important to the overall health of ecosystms. The reverse features two vibrantly coloured images by Canadian artist Tony Bianco. In one image, the artist presents two smiling children dressed in green coats, the older wearing a red toque, red mittens, and a red scarf and the younger wearing fuchsia hat, scarf and mitts, building a snowman together. The first large snowball—the snowman’s base—has been laid in the centre of the image, the younger child heaving it into position as the older child lifts the next large ball on top. Their young dog looks on from the right side of the image, tail raised in the air in excitement. In the foreground lies a small wooden sled with bright red runners. The activity takes place on the snow-covered front lawn of a quaint house, visible in the background where, on the right, snow-covered steps lead to a wreath-decked wooden door. The house’s soffit is decorated with glowing lights, as is a snow-covered pine tree to the left of the front door. Decorative gifts line the bottom of the tree. Inside the window on the right, which is fronted by a snow-filled window box, we see the family holiday tree filled with dazzling lights. In the second image, the snowman stands complete with arms, black top hat, scarf, buttons, broom, eyes, carrot nose and broad smile. The children stand on either side of it, the smaller child on its right hugging the snowman and looking admiringly at their creation and the older child on the left, facing the viewer and smiling proudly. The dog now sits on the sled, its back turned to the viewer, gazing up at the snowman’s face. The images switch when the coin is tipped; a feature rendered using the Royal Canadian Mint’s world-renowned lenticular technology. By 1886, the Ottawa team’s weekly challenge games against Montreal had done much to boost the sport’s popularity regionally. In 1903, the team won its first of 11 Stanley Cup titles. Although the Senators folded in 1933, nearly 60 years later another trio of Ottawans took up the mantle to bring back the Ottawa Senators. Each effigy is struck in ultra high relief reminiscent of ancient medallic art. Canada did not always produce its coins domestically. Until the Royal Canadian Mint opened in 1908, Canadian coins were imported from overseas. Even then, the designs and tools remained the domain of the Royal Mint in London while the Canadian facility operated as its Ottawa branch. This began to change in 1930 when the Mint became a wholly owned Canadian institution. The second coin in the series features Edward VII. Crowned at the age of 59, he is the oldest Prince of Wales ever to become king. The "Edwardian age" was shaped by his love for sport and theatre and his concentrated efforts to foster goodwill among monarchs throughout Europe. This crowned portrait of King Edward VII appeared on Canada's 1-, 5-, 10-, 25- and 50- cent coins from 1902 to 1910.

specifications:

Face Value: 15 dollars
Mintage: 10,000
Composition: 92.5% silver, 7.5% copper
Weight (g): 30
Diameter (mm): 36.15
Edge: Plain
Finish: Frosted relief on a proof-like field

Special features:

Second coin in the series following 2008 Queen Victoria.

A MINT FIRST!
