Among these are the builders—some of nature’s most talented and fascinating creatures. From bird nests to beaver dams, spider webs to anthills, the structures designed and created by these animal architects are models of structural strength and intricacy that have inspired human building in fields such as architecture, medicine, and engineering.

The Astonishing Aerial Architecture of the Orb-Weaver Spider

For thousands of years, in numerous cultures, the spider has been associated with power and mystery, as much for its incredible weaving powers as for its venomous bite. Family Araneidae, representing more than 3006 species of orb-weaving spider globally, is the spider group that spins the circular vertical “orb” webs we see regularly in gardens and forests across Canada and around the world. Each of these wheel-like constructions is a miracle of natural engineering that scientists in many nations are studying for human applications, from web biomechanics to next-generation silk fibres.
Because orb webs are so ubiquitous, it is easy to overlook how astounding they are. The basic scaffolding of an orb web is laid when the spider climbs a vertical surface, such as a tree, and drops a line of silk. This line is incredibly fine, yet is one of the strongest fibres on Earth. The silken thread floats on the wind until it catches on a second nearby vertical surface, such as a branch, to create a tightrope-like horizontal bridge line. The spider then drops another line from the midpoint of the bridge. From this basic frame, the spider strings a non-sticky border and, through a complex series of manoeuvres, creates radius lines—radii—that join the central line to the periphery of the web structure. The spider then weaves its “capture spiral”—a continuous double thread of a specific type of sticky silk that spirals from the outside of the web toward the central hub. At each junction with a radius line, the capture thread is reinforced with a special glue excreted by the spider. The central hub is a non-sticky region where the spider lurks in wait for its prey.

The raw materials of web-building—spider silks—are some of the strongest and most flexible fibres in the world. Their tensile strength exceeds that of steel and Kevlar, yet they are incredibly elastic as well. Created within the spider’s body from semi-crystalline proteins, spider silks begin as liquids and are transformed into filaments by internal application of pressure by the spider as it excretes the silk from individual spigots. Orb-weaver spiders can create up to 8 different types of silks, each originating in its own gland and having its own properties. Producing multiple threads at once, the spider weaves them into a web with its spinnerets—small organs on the underside of its abdomen.

Though researchers have undertaken experiments in extracting spider silk for the purpose of weaving textiles from these fibres, the task is far from efficient. Scientists have yet to successfully replicate this powerful material or the processes required to produce a structure with the exceptional properties of a spider’s web. Thus, the humble spider maintains her place as the queen of weavers, with the orb web in particular one of her most amazing weaving feats.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0967/3447/8468/files/Reverse_Illustration_spider__07702.1380153898.1280.1280.jpg?v=1759517116
2014-fine-silver-maple-leaf-fractional-5-coin-set-gold-plated
2014 FINE SILVER MAPLE LEAF FRACTIONAL 5-COIN SET - GOLD PLATED

2014 Gold-Plated Silver Maple Leaf Fractional Set

Description:

Each of the five coins in this exceptional commemorative set is 99.99% pure silver (see Product Specifications for diameters and metal weights). Such neutrality became essential during the 1950’s while Britain was decolonizing areas of Asia and Africa. Multinational forces had to intervene to prevent the outbreak of violence between Egypt and Israel during the Suez Crisis; and later, between Greek and Turkish communities following the declaration of independence of Cyprus.
Lester B. Pearson, then Secretary of State for External Affairs, and later Canada’s 14th Prime Minister, was instrumental in bringing a diplomatic resolution to the Suez Crisis, a visionary endeavour that popularized the word “peacekeeping,” and earned Pearson a Nobel Peace Prize. It was no surprise then, that Canada was welcomed as a key participant in the United Nation’s efforts to bring peace to Cyprus.
UNFICYP (United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus) began on March 27, 1964, and would prove to be Canada’s longest peacekeeping mission. After a decade, peace was still elusive, and the conflict threatened to escalate during a coup d’etat. Canada’s Colonel Clay Beattie, commander of the Canadian contingent and Chief of Staff to Indian Lieutenant-General Prem Chand, leader of the UN Forces in Cyprus, responded to the situation with a new style of peacekeeping—playing an active role between the adversaries rather than passively occupying the ground between them to supervise ceasefires and the withdrawal of troops.
Canadian battalions remained in Cyprus until the mid-1990’s and a small group of observers is still present today. As it evolved from colony to Dominion to independent state, Canada was uniquely positioned to draw from the systems and experience of both Britain and the United States, in order to ultimately build a system entirely its own. This process was rarely smooth. Marked from its earliest stages by rigorous debate about who should control such processes as issuing banknotes, for instance, Canada’s fledgling banking system represented a complex interplay of commercial and political interests at home and abroad.

The earliest chartered banks of deposit and issue in Canada were granted charters relatively late in the colony’s history—in the early 1820s. These institutions were governed largely by their charters.As the nation changed over the decades that followed, becoming united in a single Province of Canada in 1841 and emerging as a Dominion following Confederation in 1867, banking and its associated practices were increasingly constrained by national and provincial legislation rather than solely by individual bank charters.

1859 Bank of Western Canada Banknote
The 1859 Bank of Western Canada banknote upon which this coin design is based was issued by a short-lived chartered bank based in the region that is now Niagara Falls, Ontario. Said to have been established in 1859 by an American tavern owner, the Bank of Western Canada had its charter revoked, to considerable scandal, on October 15, 1863, alongside several other banks that had also become insolvent. The incident formed part of a pattern at the time that had greatly eroded public faith in chartered banks’ notes. Notorious “wildcat” banks like the Bank of Western Canada were in the business of issuing notes they knew they could never redeem. Outcry arose over the ease with which chartered banks could thus dupe the public with worthless paper. This outcry fed national momentum toward gold-backed government-issued notes, a practice that began with Provincial notes in 1866 and Dominion notes following Confederation. Along with broader legislative controls under the British North America Act, this first of many steps toward a unified, centralized national currency helped to reinvigorate public faith in paper money.

Saint George Slaying the Dragon
Though the Bank of Western Canada did not survive long, the iconic image of Saint George slaying the dragon that appears on this note has roots that go back thousands of years. At the time of the note’s issuance, Saint George had been present on popular British gold sovereigns since 1817. The sovereign design, by famed medalist Benedetto Pistrucci, featured a caped Saint George on a rearing horse slaying a dragon at his feet and became so iconic that it may have influenced the America Bank Note Company artist who designed the vignette on this note.

Though the Saint’s origins are ancient and murky, the version of the Saint George story that had become popular by the nineteenth century centered on a horseman travelling through Libya. Happening upon a young girl tied to a stake near a swamp, he learns of a terrible dragon that has been tormenting the local people. Though they had offered the monster sacrifices of sheep to appease it, it continued its relentless torment. In a final attempt to save themselves, the people had chosen to sacrifice the King’s daughter. When the dragon inevitably appears, he is laid low by Saint George, who uses the girl’s girdle, or garter, to bind it and lead it into the city, where it is destroyed, tamed, or converted according to various traditions. The element of the princess’s garter may historically be associated with the Order of the Garter established during the Crusades, of which Saint George is patron.

Regardless of the historical accuracy of the story, Saint George’s iconography of chivalry has remained consistent since the Middle Ages. Saint George the Dragon Slayer, with his red cross on white background, was made the patron saint of England in the 1340s by Edward III. Since that time, the saint has featured prominently in the works of many of the western world’s most noted artists. Saint George remained a popular figure on British medallions and coinage throughout the nineteenth century and was thus a fitting candidate for depiction on Canadian banknotes such as this one issued by the Bank of Western Canada in 1859.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0967/3447/8468/files/Banknote_env___15285.1383001259.1280.1280.jpg?v=1759517663
clearance-2014-20-fine-silver-coin-iconic-polar-bear
2014 1oz $20 ICONIC POLAR BEAR FINE SILVER COIN

2014 $20 FINE SILVER COIN
ICONIC POLAR BEAR

Theme:
The majesty and power of this amazing Canadian Arctic species is captured in stunning detail in the Royal Canadian Mint’s world-renowned 99.99% pure silver.

Description:
This coin is 99.99% pure silver. Becoming isolated in the glaciated northern environment, the species developed important features that have allowed it to thrive in a land where temperatures can dip below -45 degrees Celsius for much of the year. These features include a thick, colourless pelt that protects it from the cold and camouflages it against the snow, dense fat layers, claws and teeth optimized for hunting and eating seals, fur-covered footpads, foreshortened ears and tail to help retain heat, and more highly-developed scenting capabilities than other bears.

As worldwide fascination with the polar bear and its Arctic habitat grows, we can remain hopeful that the incredible survival skills that make it so symbolically poignant for Canadians will also help to preserve this amazing animal for the long term.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0967/3447/8468/files/Polar_Bear_env__90593.1383004849.1280.1280.jpg?v=1759517773
2014-20-fine-silver-coin-pond-hockey
2014 1oz $20 POND HOCKEY FINE SILVER COIN

Description:
From the highest echelon of NHL greatness to a casual game of pickup in the street, hockey weaves the very fibre of this nation. Solving the mystery of how they lived and died has captivated Canadian researchers and laypeople for over a century.

Fossils are surprisingly uncommon, and complete fossils are extremely rare; thus, palaeontologists often need to gather knowledge from many other scientific disciplines to understand the evidence they uncover. Palaeontologists carefully study and interpret findings to arrive at a well integrated hypothesis of what the lifestyle of a fossilized creature could have been. Technology offers help in documenting and dating fossils, but palaeontologists’ most important tools are meticulous research, creativity, logic and patience.

Nova Scotia’s Bay of Fundy region is famous for preserving rocks of Late Triassic and Early Jurassic age–the dawn of the Age of the Dinosaurs. Although footprints left by dinosaurs are commonly preserved there, fossil bones are extremely rare and generally fragmentary. Among these specimens are isolated teeth providing strong evidence for the presence of a small bipedal ornithischian dinosaur during the Early Jurassic. Because the teeth of all known primitive herbivorous, “bird-hipped” dinosaurs look very similar, it is difficult to identify the exact species, or reconstruct what the animal looked like, based on teeth alone. However, similar-aged fossils found elsewhere in the world can shed light on the identity of the Nova Scotian ornithischian. Very few Early Jurassic ornithischians are known around the world, the best-known being Lesothosaurus from South Africa and Scutellosaurus from Arizona. Because Scutellosaurus is the only small ornithischian known from the Early Jurassic of North America, palaeontologists can hypothesize that the Nova Scotia teeth may have belonged to Scutellosaurus. However, they must remain open to the possibility that the teeth could be from a different animal. Since all of the continents were still connected during the Early Jurassic, dinosaurs were free to roam and it is possible that animal species from Africa could also have been present on the landmass that now forms Nova Scotia.

Translated as “little shield lizard,” Scutellosaurus was named by American palaeontologist Edwin H. Colbert in 1981. The Early Jurassic herbivore reached 1.2 m in length, had an extremely long tail, and was covered by hundreds of small pieces of bony armor (called scutes) along its neck, back, and tail. Its forelimbs and hands were relatively long, suggesting that it was probably able to alternate between a bipedal and quadrupedal stance. Unlike more advanced ornithischians, the teeth of Scutellosaurus were positioned near the edge of the jaws, indicating that it lacked well-developed cheeks to keep food in its mouth while chewing. Based on its bony armor and other characteristics of its skeleton, it is believed that Scutellosaurus may have been an early ancestor of ankylosaurs and stegosaurs – the armoured dinosaurs.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0967/3447/8468/files/Reverse_Scutellosaurus__78559.1383006796.1280.1280.jpg?v=1759517836
2014-5-fine-silver-coin-bullion-replica
2014 1oz $5 FINE SILVER COIN REPLICA

2014 $5 FINE SILVER COIN "BULLION" REPLICA

The iconic Silver Maple Leaf is a highly sought-after Royal Canadian Mint bullion coin. From here, the image circles out in a panoply of Canadian illustrations; images from Canadian history and portraits of historical figures; scenes from first nations culture, art, and mythology; Canadian flora and fauna; people bundled up against winter’s chill; and much more. Beautifully rendered by Royal Canadian Mint engravers, this mesmerizing design offers a something new for the viewer at each glance. Barnard has also cleverly hidden within the design the initials of each Canadian province and territory. Selective colour application showcases the caterpillar’s bright yellow, black and white stripes as it crawls along a bright green milkweed leaf—a plant that plays an integral part in the Monarch’s early life cycles. A large chrysalis is engraved in the background as a reminder of the Monarch’s next stage, at which time it will enclose itself during its metamorphosis into one of Canada’s most recognizable butterflies. In the background, a convoy of ships represent those who first delivered Canada to the war in 1914. The First World War was the last conflict to be uniquely defined by the foot soldier; therefore, the lone soldier in the foreground is particularly poignant. Already shaped by the battles of 1915, our soldier is kneeling with his right foot stretched past the circular image frame. He is pondering his journey as he looks out into the horizon where silhouettes of battle-weary soldiers march on in the distance – much as they did through to the final days of war in 1918. The Maple Leaf crest cap badge at the bottom of the image adds motifs linked to the CEF as a tribute to its contributions.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0967/3447/8468/files/Expeditionary_Force_env__84900.1400204204.1280.1280.jpg?v=1759521241
2014-10-fine-silver-coin-70th-anniversary-of-d-day
2014 1/2oz $10 70TH ANNIVERSARY OF D-DAY FINE SILVER COIN

In commemoration of the 70th anniversary of D-Day, this finely detailed coin offers a unique first-person perspective of the peril faced by Canadian soldiers during their landing at Juno Beach.
