Their fossilized bones testify to the massive beasts that once ruled the earth but disappeared suddenly 65 million years ago. During the time of these great beasts, a great inland sea covered much of western Canada and the area now known as Alberta and Saskatchewan was a lush subtropical shore and home to over 35 dinosaur species. At just 14-17 cm (6-7 in), it can excavate a nest cavity in a dead tree just 10 cm (4 in) around. This gives the Downy more habitat options than larger woodpeckers that need bigger trees, and it often nests in suburban woods across southern Canada. The Downy can survive a life-time of hammering because its strong, chisel-shaped beak, spongy skull structure and strong neck muscles absorb the force of the blows. Even its nostrils are covered with feathers to avoid inhaling sawdust. Watch for a flash of red on the back of the head when you locate that tell-tale dat-dat-dat —it's a sure sign that a male Downy has just come into view.

specifications:

Face Value: 25 cents
Mintage: 25,000
Composition: Nickel plated steel
Weight (g): 12.61
Diameter (mm): 35
Edge: Plain
Finish: Specimen

Special features:

Beautiful full-colour painted design of one of thirteen of Canada’s species of woodpeckers.

This theme is featured in the Canadian Wildlife Federation’s ‘wildly’ popular Hinterland Who’s Who program.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0967/3447/8468/files/2008_birds_of_Canada_woodpecker_illustration_reverse__51217.1399398552.1280.1280.jpg?v=1759520105
2008-sterling-silver-coin-imax-canadian-achievements-series
2008 1oz $30 STERLING SILVER COIN - IMAX CANADIAN ACHIEVEMENTS SERIES

Get in the movie!

Just over 40 years ago, an idea was born that transformed the way people experience movies. For nearly one hundred years prior, the French had tried to get a foothold on this part of the New World but were outmatched by scurvy, harsh winters and hostile natives.

Now, as Champlain surveyed this strategic point on the river, its natural harbour and aboriginal presence, he knew it was the ideal location for a fur trading post. Champlain's first habitation was a residence, warehouse and fort combined, complete with cannons, a palisade of wood stakes, a moat and a drawbridge. Within the year, it was a bustling enterprise where First Nations people came to trade furs for European goods.

As ships sailed the ocean and canoes paddled up and down river, Kebec became a bustling maritime city, the third largest in North America. By the mid 1800's, it was a major outlet for lumber and soon added wheat to its exports. But the city's unique character attracted more than industry. Two hundred years ago, wealthy tourists were already writing about this "masterpiece of art and nature" in their memoirs.

Now as the only walled city in North America celebrates its 400th year, visitors have an enviable opportunity to literally step into the past and listen to the echoes of history from within its walls.

Specifications:
Mintage: 60,000
Finish: Proof

Special Features:
It is the first such set to feature the commemorative silver dollar selectively gold plated on both the reverse and the obverse. The engine was fitted with a stainless steel boiler jacket and was painted in silver and royal blue. Royal crests were mounted on the front and tender sides while royal crowns appeared on the side running boards. Locomotive 2850 set a North American record by completing the 4,921 km (3,061 mi) tour on its own. When it returned to regular service, the royal crowns were maintained on its running boards.
