The reverse image features Canadian artist Bonnie Ross' depiction of HMS Shannon leaving the Halifax harbor during the War of 1812. In a strikingly detailed design, the image covers the entire reverse face of the coin. Behind the central image of the vessel, the docks and buildings of early 19th-century Halifax harbor line the left side of the coin, while on the right side a tall ship sails in the distance. The central image is a starboard-side portrait of HMS Shannon rendered in elaborate detail, sails unfurled and filled by a steady westerly wind, jib boom and bowsprit pointed to sea. The foremast, mainmast, and mizzenmast rise regally above the storied frigate, the wind sock atop its mainmast blowing steadily in the wind. Exceptional engraving realistically renders the choppy waters of Halifax Harbour, creating a powerful sense of forward movement. On the polished silver field above and to the right of the ship, a selectively gold-plated cameo presents the original figurehead from the HMS Shannon's bow. In this detail, we see a robust example of Lismer's style during a period in which he created some of his most interesting and enduring works. It was around this time, for instance, that Lismer evolved the pattern of dense composition, crude and almost lurid brushwork, and interplay of human and natural landscapes that would become characteristic of his work. The subject is a fishing wharf lined with huts, set against a village on a high bluff in the background. Lobster traps, floats, weights, buoys, barrels, bags, bottles, drying racks, docks, fisherman, shacks, and homes are piled one upon the other, the profuse ephemera of maritime life bursting from the expertly engraved reproduction in layers of mesmerizing detail. The density of this world of objects is emphasized in the dizzying interaction of shapes and the rough, swirling character of Lismer's brushstrokes, skillfully captured by Royal Canadian Mint engravers. Together with the slightly off-kilter vantage point of the painting, these details evoke the fairytale quality of sea lore. The name of the order for all butterflies, Lepidoptera, means scale winged and refers to the unique structure of butterfly wings, which are composed of microscopic scales layered on a thin, transparent membrane called chitin that stretches over structures that are much like veins. This wing construction, which is being studied by scientists for applications in photonics and solar heating, helps butterflies to collect solar heat as they bask in the sun. The black colouring common on the wings of many butterflies, including the Canadian Tiger Swallowtail, is also important in thisprocess. The unique internal structure of the wing scales is responsible for the shimmering colour of many butterfly wings.

Unlike other Swallowtail species, the Canadian Tiger Swallowtail breeds only a single generation each year. Its survival mechanisms, which include exceptional camouflage, help to protect it through its various stages of life. The larvae go through several moults, with their colour at each stage adapted to camouflage them from predators. In the earliest stages, they resemble bird droppings to deter consumption by birds. By the time they are mature caterpillars, they are dark green with two spots that look like eyes on their swollen front-section, lending them an uncanny resemblance to the head of a snake. They feed only at night—a further protection. When the caterpillar does need to defend itself, the osmeterium, an organ at the back of the head that is unique to Swallowtails, releases a foul smell.

Found at the edges of hardwood forests and prevalent in flower gardens and among flowering bushes like lilac, the Canadian Tiger Swallowtail is common in all regions of Canada from mid-May to July. Clues to the life story of our land and the creatures that once lived here lie encased in rock and earth. Solving the mystery of how they lived and died has captivated Canadian researchers and laypeople for over a century.

One of the first fossil discoveries to capture the Canadian imagination was that of Bathygnathus borealis. In 1845, while digging a freshwater well near New London, Prince Edward Island, a man named Donald McLeod found what appeared to be part of the jaw of an ancient sharp-toothed animal. He gave it to Sir John William Dawson (the father of Atlantic Canada geology and paleontology), who later sold it to the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, in the care of American paleontologist Joseph Leidy, to be studied. Initially, Leidy incorrectly suggested the bone was part of a dinosaur’s lower jaw. At the time, dinosaurs were known from incomplete skeletons in Europe but almost solely from footprints in North America, which led to this early misidentification. It wasn’t until 1905 that the bone was correctly identified as part of the upper jaw of a sphenacodontid, a family of “pelycosaur-grade” mammal-like reptiles or synapsids, animals that lived from the Late Pennsylvanian to middle Permian ages. Based on similarities of the jaw bones, experts now believe that the specimen could actually belong to the sail-back Dimetrodon or a similar animal, although fossil evidence of a sail has yet to be found. If Bathygnathus was similar to Dimetrodon, the large “sail” on its back could have helped regulate its body temperature.

Though exact details about the appearance and lifestyle of Bathygnathus borealis remain elusive, palaeontologists have been able to glean considerable information from this single fragment of upper jaw bone and its discovery site. They know the creature lived between 290 and 260 million years ago, when what is now Prince Edward Island lay near the equator. Its teeth suggest it was a large carnivorous synapsid that could have reached 2-3 metres in length. To this day the Bathygnathus borealis jaw bone remains the highest-quality specimen of the Permianperiod ever found on Prince Edward Island.

With its early mis-identification as a dinosaur, Bathygnathus was long considered the first Canadian dinosaur discovery but its revised identity does not diminish its scientific and historical significance, making it the first pelycosaur ever discovered in the world.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0967/3447/8468/files/2013_Dinosaurs_of_Canada_Bathygnathus_Borealis_REVERSE__29121.1370138905.1280.1280.jpg?v=1759515385
2013-20-pure-silver-coin-300th-anniversary-of-louisbourg
2013 1oz $20 PURE SILVER COIN: 300TH ANNIVERSARY OF LOUISBOURG

Theme:
Laying the foundation for a nation: The 300th Anniversary of Louisbourg

Description:
This $20 coin is certified to be 99.99% pure silver with a diameter of 40 millimetres and a metal weight of 31.60 grams. Palaeontologists carefully study and interpret findings to arrive at a well integrated hypothesis of what the lifestyle of a fossilized creature could have been. Technology offers help in documenting and dating fossils, but palaeontologists’ most important tools are meticulous research, creativity, logic and patience.

Nova Scotia’s Bay of Fundy region is famous for preserving rocks of Late Triassic and Early Jurassic age–the dawn of the Age of the Dinosaurs. Although footprints left by dinosaurs are commonly preserved there, fossil bones are extremely rare and generally fragmentary. Among these specimens are isolated teeth providing strong evidence for the presence of a small bipedal ornithischian dinosaur during the Early Jurassic. Because the teeth of all known primitive herbivorous, “bird-hipped” dinosaurs look very similar, it is difficult to identify the exact species, or reconstruct what the animal looked like, based on teeth alone. However, similar-aged fossils found elsewhere in the world can shed light on the identity of the Nova Scotian ornithischian. Very few Early Jurassic ornithischians are known around the world, the best-known being Lesothosaurus from South Africa and Scutellosaurus from Arizona. Because Scutellosaurus is the only small ornithischian known from the Early Jurassic of North America, palaeontologists can hypothesize that the Nova Scotia teeth may have belonged to Scutellosaurus. However, they must remain open to the possibility that the teeth could be from a different animal. Since all of the continents were still connected during the Early Jurassic, dinosaurs were free to roam and it is possible that animal species from Africa could also have been present on the landmass that now forms Nova Scotia.

Translated as “little shield lizard,” Scutellosaurus was named by American palaeontologist Edwin H. Colbert in 1981. The Early Jurassic herbivore reached 1.2 m in length, had an extremely long tail, and was covered by hundreds of small pieces of bony armor (called scutes) along its neck, back, and tail. Its forelimbs and hands were relatively long, suggesting that it was probably able to alternate between a bipedal and quadrupedal stance. Unlike more advanced ornithischians, the teeth of Scutellosaurus were positioned near the edge of the jaws, indicating that it lacked well-developed cheeks to keep food in its mouth while chewing. Based on its bony armor and other characteristics of its skeleton, it is believed that Scutellosaurus may have been an early ancestor of ankylosaurs and stegosaurs – the armoured dinosaurs.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0967/3447/8468/files/Reverse_Scutellosaurus__78559.1383006796.1280.1280.jpg?v=1759517836
2014-25-fine-silver-coin-o-canada-the-igloo
2014 1oz $25 O CANADA - THE IGLOO FINE SILVER COIN (TONED)

The first 1 ounce pure silver coin in the Royal Canadian Mint’s O Canada series focusing on iconic Canadian images, this beautiful coin celebrates the unique Igloo.

PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS

Composition: Fine silver
Mintage: 8,500
Weight (g): 31.39
Diameter (mm): 38
Face Value: $25
Finish: Proof
Edge: Serrated
Artist: Yves Berube
Packaging: Maroon clamshell with custom beauty box
Finished size: 67 mm x 67 mm

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The first coin in the Royal Canadian Mint’s exciting new 2014 O Canada series featuring iconic images celebrating all that makes Canada unique!

Masterfully crafted by Royal Canadian Mint engravers and struck in premium proof finish to bring this stunning Arctic image to life.

A limited mintage of only 8,500 coins means that this piece is sure to be sought after by collectors.

Own a piece of Canada’s North, beautifully captured in one ounce of 99.99% pure silver.

An excellent addition to any nature-focused, Northern, or Canadiana collection.

A beautiful gift or collectible for those who love Canada’s North, Inuit and First Nations heritage, historical images, nature, original artwork, and Canadian themes.

DESIGN:
This 1-ounce coin is certified to be 99.99% pure silver with a diameter of 38 millimetres and a metal weight of 31.39 grams. In this evocative scene, the doe walks behind her two knock-kneed and spotted offspring through a grassy clearing backed by young boreal forest: the deer’s preferred warm-weather habitat. In the lower left centre of the image, one young fawn glances to the left, its long ears extended back behind its head as it listens to its mother behind it. Viewed from the front with its ungainly little body in a graceful curve, the fawn’s youthful spots are clearly displayed, along with its long slender legs. Its sibling walks beside it, on the right side of the image, looking toward the right. Its front left leg is raised as it takes an uncertain step forward. Like its sibling, it keeps at least one ear trained on its mother at all times. Behind the fawns, the large doe walks with her head bowed toward her offspring, her slim but muscular body presented in dimensional detail by Royal Canadian Mint engravers. Capturing a powerful and energetic moment, this scene centres around the two leaping deer. In the foreground, the buck illustrates the “kick-off” stage of a deer’s leaping motion, with forelegs bent under its torso and back legs fully extended. His large, powerful neck holds his antlered head aloft and his namesake tail extends up and behind, its bright underside alerting other deer to danger. Just behind him and slightly to the left side of the image, a doe illustrates the landing phase of the leap, as her front legs stretch out ahead of her and her head, neck, and body point downward, while her rear legs, just visible behind her partner, bend toward her belly. The sense of motion is subtly enhanced by the composition, in which doe, buck, and fallen tree share a common trajectory. In the background, a tall conifer forest rises toward the sky. Here, a male and female mule deer have made their way to lower elevations where they have entered a foothills meadow to forage. The early morning light creates a blue cast on the misty scenery, softening the vibrant autumn colours of the surrounding foliage. In the foreground, the buck stands tall and attentive to any sound, turning its head to the left, while a doe follows behind in the background; with the annual rutting season soon approaching, this male’s swollen neck and large rack already contribute to its imposing stature, making him the dominant male within his territory. A beautiful overlay of colour to the engraved design allows the viewer to glimpse the mule deer’s distinctive characteristics, from the dark tan-coloured fur with white patches on its throat and face, to the long black-rimmed ears and the buck’s forked antlers.

OTHER COINS:

Bighorn Sheep
Majestic Elk
Mule Deer
Alpha Wolf
Snowy Owl

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0967/3447/8468/files/20_Deer_Reverse__50206.1427338188.1280.1280.jpg?v=1759524781
2005-10-fine-silver-year-of-the-veteran
2005 $10 YEAR OF THE VETERAN FINE SILVER

Theme:
To go wherever we’re needed… To do whatever isasked of us. A son leaves for duty, a mother weeps. Through sorrowful tears, a sister whispers “goodbye,” knowing she will break her promise and also leave home. She too, feels driven to serve. Across Canada, this scenario played out in countless homes as two World Wars and the Korean War stirred a great sense of humanity in the hearts of Canadians. Many felt compelled to act, to rush to the aid of the oppressed and join the fight for freedom. As soldiers, sailors and airmen headed into battle, nurses, doctors and support personnel were not far behind. Faith and hope survived the battlefield by finding refuge in the hearts of clergymen. On the home front, people took to the factories to build military equipment and assemble supplies. They supported the war effort in any way they could. Regardless of the role each person played, War was now their acquaintance and heartbreak would soon be calling. It arrived in the form of physical pain, haunting memories and the irreparable torment of human loss. These were the times that bravery and self-sacrifice found their true definition. The soldier’s ability to find courage in the depths of despair is a concept that is difficult to
conceive in the comfort of modern freedom. Carp is a particularly auspicious symbol as well, both for its reputation as a prolific producer of eggs as well as its symbol’s similar pronunciation to the characters for “profit” and “power.” In a lucky grouping of three, the carp are seen jumping out of the water (in itself symbolic of continuous abundance), which is represented by a repetitive pattern of rippling water that frames the reverse image.
